Can you McGurk yourself? Self-face and self-voice in audiovisual speech

This experiment used the McGurk effect to test the influence of identity on audiovisual speech. Participants recorded disyllables which were used to create McGurk stimuli. These stimuli were further manipulated so that the facial and vocal identities in each were either from the same speaker (matched) or from two different speakers (mismatched). When identities matched, self-produced speech was less susceptible to the McGurk effect. When identities were mismatched, pmiicipants were less susceptible to the McGurk effect if hearing their own voice, but were not affected by seeing their own face. These results suggest that vocal identity influences speech processing and that facial identity is processed independently of speech.
